WORK YEAR: Full-time/ 11 Months/ 186 Days (prorated based on date of hire)/ 7.5 hours per day

START DATE: As soon as possible after interviews

SALARY: Salary Schedule 04H/2 $16.26 to $19.09 per hour, placement dependent on experience. Stipend pay for Doctorate $500.00 per year.

POSITION DESCRIPTION – California State Preschool Children’s Centers:

Under the direction of the Direct Service Coordinator and supervision of the Child Development Site Supervisor, the Child Development Teacher is responsible for the implementation of a high quality, comprehensive and developmentally appropriate program to meet the individual needs of children and their families. The Child Development Teacher will interact with children as a positive model and a facilitator of learning, develop and implement curriculum and daily activities and an effective learning environment, supervise and interact with young children and participate in child assessment processes. The Teacher will promote positive growth and development, the high quality children’s program, and support parents toward family health and stability.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: [May include, but not limited to the following.]

  1. Implement elements of the high quality early childhood education program to meet the developmental needs of individual children.
  2. Engage children through instructional strategies to facilitate learning and optimal progress across the domains of development.
  3. Participate in curriculum development and implementation, to provide a quality children’s program including group time, transitions, and learning activities.
  4. Conduct child observation, record keeping and assessment process to track children’s progress and learning including the Desired Results Developmental Profile system.
  5. Interact with parents and participate in parent conferences.
  6. Implement elements of the nutrition program.
  7. Supervise assigned support staff and volunteers.
  8. Promote a safe and healthy environment.
  9. Embrace and participate in supplementary support service programs.

QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of/Ability to:

  1. Apply principles and practices supporting child development and high quality early childhood education.
  2. Implement development based curriculum, including activities and experiences with integrated multi-cultural and anti-bias elements, using effective instructional strategies.
  3. Work and interact effectively with children and families from diverse populations, cultures and backgrounds.
  4. Communicate and work cooperatively, effectively and collaboratively with all staff.
  5. Demonstrate reliable, punctual, and stable working style in performance of assignments.
  6. Display stability, tact, flexibility, respect, and support in interactions with children, parents, staff and the community.
  7. How to insure children’s success and learning.
  8. Principles of confidentiality, collaboration and professionalism.
  9. Understanding of diverse families and their needs and ways to support them.
  10. Work productively with independent initiative.
  11. Support families in their effort toward success and stability.
  12. Participate as an integral member of Child Development Programs and Services.

Certification, Experience and Training:

  1. Child Development Teacher Permit or
  2. Qualify for a Child Development Teacher Permit by meeting attached Permit criteria.
  3. Experience working directly with preschool age children preferred.
  4. Pediatric First Aide and CPR certified (Required within 90 days of hire)

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Primarily works in indoor school or playground environment with furniture and equipment built to accommodate 3 year old and 4 year old preschool children.

CHILD DEVELOPMENT TEACHER PERMIT

AUTHORIZATION

A Child Development Teacher Permit authorizes the holder to provide service in the care, development, and instruction of children in a child development program, and supervise a Child Development Permit Associate Teacher, a Child Development Permit Assistant, and an aide.

REQUIREMENTS:

Option 1 [All of (a), (b) and (c) below]

Completion of twenty-four semester units of course work in early childhood education/child development including at least one course in each of the following core areas:

    • child/human growth and development;
    • child, family and community, or child and family relations;
    • programs/curriculum

Either of the following may be used to partially meet the twenty-four semester unit requirement:

A two- or three-semester unit supervised field work course, including both the field and course work components, may be used toward the required twenty-four early childhood education/child development semester units, but the same field work course may not be used to meet the experience requirement, OR

Successful completion of the Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential, which may be used for nine semester units of credit toward the required twenty-four semester units. Completion of 175 days of experience in an instruction capacity in a child care and development program, working at least three hours per day within the last four years. (Experience may include paid and/or volunteer work.)

Sixteen diversified semester units in general education (i.e., at least one course in each of the following areas:

  • Humanities and/or Fine Arts
  • Social Sciences
  • Math and /or Science
  • English/Language Arts).

Option 2

Completion of an Associate of Arts degree or higher in early childhood education or child development or a related field, with a three semester unit supervised field experience in an early childhood education setting.

TERM AND RENEWAL

The Child Development Teacher Permit is issued for five years and is renewable for successive five-year periods. Renewal requires completion of 105 hours of professional growth.

  1. To comply with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, all new employees must provide proof of identity and authorization to work in the United States.
  2. FINGERPRINTING FOR CONDUCTING A BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION IS REQUIRED (and completed upon offer of employment)
