Summary
Following the close of the recruitment qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the physical agility exam that is tentatively scheduled for Thursday April 17, 2025 at 8:00 a.m. Qualified applicants can expect to receive an email notification inviting them to the exams no later than Monday April 14, 2025
Physical Agility Exam Information:
This examination will be held at the Butte County Public Safety Training Center located at 1222 Openshaw Road, Oroville, CA 95965 at 8:00 a.m. This examination consists of the following tasks that MUST be completed within the amount of time specified. Failing any one of the 5 tasks will result in failure for the entire physical agility exam. Each task will be performed separately one person at a time except for the 500 yard run which will be performed in a group. Listed below is a description of the physical agility tasks.
- Solid Wall Obstacle - Five (5) yard run to a six (6) foot high obstacle, and over the obstacle to a twenty-five (25) yard run to the finish. Must finish within 16.6 seconds.
- Chain Link Fence Obstacle - Five (5) yard run to six (6) foot high obstacle, and over the obstacle to a twenty-five (25) yard run to the finish. Must finish within 14.6 seconds.
- Ninety-nine (99) Yard Obstacle Run - Run around a marked course with several angles and then lift yourself over the three (3) foot high hurdle at the end of the run. Must finish within 33.8 seconds.
- Dummy Drag - Drag a dummy weighing approximately 175 pounds across cement for a distance of thirty (30) feet. Must finish within 9.6 seconds.
- Five hundred (500) yard Run - Run around the track five hundred (500) yards. Must finish within 178 seconds.
FLSA: Non-ExemptDEFINITIONUnder general supervision, performs a wide variety of duties involving prevention of crime conducts security screenings including operation and monitoring of security screening equipment; safeguards and protects County and/or contracted non-County property, buildings, and equipment; performs bailiff and limited protective work at County Courthouse buildings; and performs related duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISEDReceives general supervision from assigned supervisory or management personnel. Exercises no direct supervision over staff.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICSThis non-sworn journey-level classification assigned to provide security in and around Butte County Court and government facilities. Positions at this level exercise judgment and initiative in their assigned tasks, receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.
This classification is distinguished from the Deputy Sheriff in that this classification may not issue citations, receive prisoners, does not have arrest powers, and does not perform active law enforcement duties.

- Provides security to assigned building(s), either patrolling on foot or in a vehicle, or by being assigned to a specific post.
- Participates with sworn and non-sworn Sheriff's Security Personnel in securing Court and other government facilities and conducting searches.
- Provides a uniformed presence in non-criminal courtrooms, such as Civil and Family Law Courts, and assists sworn and non-sworn Sheriff's security personnel in courtrooms hearing criminal matters.
- Prepares calendars and organizes court appearances between attorneys and their clients to maximize the efficiency of court proceedings.
- Protects persons and property at assigned facility; prevents thefts, vandalism, property removal or tampering, concealment of weapons, or other prohibited material.
- Notifies proper authorities in connection with suspected criminal activity, hazardous conditions, property damage, or violations of County rules and regulations.
- Observes and reports potential hazards, including fire, or building, grounds, and other safety concerns.
- Restrains or temporarily detains violators pending other law enforcement assistance or action.
- Regulates, controls, and directs the flow of traffic and parking at assigned location(s).
- Controls access to assigned location(s) by requiring proper authorization and identification; utilizes metal detectors, or other security screening devices to examine personal property for weapons or other prohibited items.
- Monitors alarm systems, electronic surveillance equipment and responds to locally activated fire, panic or other alarms.
- Prepares accurate and detailed incident reports; prepares and maintains other records, reports, and logs as required.
- Provides information to the public, both in person and over the phone.
- Provides emergency medical attention to the public when responding to calls for assistance; requests appropriate medical assistance, as necessary.
- Performs related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
High school diploma or equivalent GED certificate.
Certifications and Licenses:- Must possess a valid US driver's license upon date of application. Must obtain California driver's license following hire date per California DMV regulations.
- Completion of Penal Code Section 832 arrest and firearms training by the end of the probationary period.
- Must obtain and maintain a valid First Aid and CPR certification by the end of the probationary period.
Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical RequirementsPHYSICAL DEMANDS- Mobility, physical strength, and stamina to respond to and perform assigned duties; to respond to emergency situations and apprehend suspects; to frequently walk, run, stand on uneven terrain, and climb and descend structures to identify problems or hazards; to frequently bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform work; and to work in a secondary office or station environment, and use standard office equipment, including a computer.
- Vision in the normal visual range with or without correction sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents and to operate equipment;
- Finger and manual dexterity is needed to operate police services equipment and firearms, and to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard.
- Hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone or radio.
WORKING CONDITIONS- Employees work indoors and outdoors, and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards and hazardous physical substances and fumes.
- Employees may interact with members of the public or with staff under emotionally stressful conditions while interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
- The duties of this class are performed in an environment with exposure to criminal offenders, mentally ill individuals and persons potentially infected with communicable diseases.
EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS UTILIZED- Equipment utilized includes automotive patrol vehicles; impact baton; two-way radios; cameras; pepper spray; and computerized and conventional office equipment.
Disaster Service WorkerAll Butte County employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.

Public Safety Dispatcher Pay:POST Dispatcher Certificate: 2.5% Communication Training Officer, 3.5% Intermediate, 4.5% Advanced.
Salary Step Increases: The beginning salary and the top of the salary range are usually shown on the job announcement. Upon satisfactory service, salary increases of approximately 5% may be given annually until the top of the salary range has been attained.
Boot Allowance: $200.04 for each year, paid in monthly installments. For eligible classifications only.
Holidays: 12 paid holidays per year.
Vacation: 0-4.99 years: 15 days/yr.; 5-9.99 years: 20 days/yr.; 10-19.99 years: 25 days/yr.; 20+ years: 27 days/yr. Note - accrued vacation leave may not be used until after six months of employment.
Sick Leave: 96 hours of sick leave are earned each year with no maximum accrual.
Bereavement Leave: Maximum of 40 hours for each occurrence in the immediate family.
Health Plan including Dental Insurance and Vision Insurance: Coverage under the Butte County Health Plan is for employees and their eligible dependents. Depending upon the plan selected by the employee, the County contributes a substantial amount of the total cost of the complete health package, which consists of medical, vision, and dental insurance. Currently, the amount the County contributes for family coverage is $1342.00/month. For those employees who have health coverage from other sources, and who elect to not participate in the Butte County Health Plan, the County offers a monthly taxable Cash-Back allowance. The current of the taxable Cash-Back allowance is $503.34 per month (prorated for less than fulltime employees). This benefit is $300 per month for Employees hired on or after January 1, 2014.
Life Insurance: The County provides $25,000 in life insurance with additional coverage available at a minimal cost.
Retirement: The County is in the Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) coordinated with Social Security.
"Classic Members"- 2% @ 55. Final compensation based on Single Highest Year. Employee responsible for full 7% employee share effective 1/1/2013.
"New Members" to PERS- 2% @ 62. Final compensation based on Highest Three Year Average. Employee responsible for one half (1/2) the normal cost of the CalPERS Pension.
"New Member" is defined by law (PEPRA) as an "
1) individual who has never been a member of any public retirement system prior to 1/1/2013 or
2) An individual who becomes a member of a public retirement system for the first time on or after January 1, 2013, and who was previously a member of a public retirement system, but who was not subject to reciprocity. or
3) An individual who was an active member in a public retirement system and who, after a break in service of more than six months, returned to active membership in that system with a new employer
Deferred Compensation:The County offers a 457 Deferred Compensation program. Deposits into this plan are strictly voluntary and are made through a payroll deduction on a tax-deferred basis. The County does not make contributions to the employees' Deferred Compensation accounts.
Disability Insurance:For short-term disability, the County participates in California State Disability Insurance (SDI) fund. County employees are also covered by an employee-paid long-term disability program. The long-term disability insurance benefit is 60% of the disabled employee's biweekly wage.
Flexible Spending Program:County employees can elect to participate in a Flexible Spending Program. This program allows employees to use pre-tax dollars to pay for certain health care and/or dependent care expenses. In addition, employees can choose to have their portion of the monthly Health Plan premium withheld from their checks on a pre-tax basis as well. Generally, employees who participate in the Flexible Spending Program have less taxes withheld for their payroll checks than if they had elected not to do so.
Tuition Reimbursement: Up to $500/year.
Employee Assistance Program (EAP): The County of Butte provides an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for employees and their eligible dependents. The EAP offers confidential, professional counseling services.
