illuminAid is a 501 (c)3 non-profit corporation, founded in 2008 by Matt and Patrice York, a spousal entrepreneur team based in Northern California. The Yorks have run a successful consumer electronics content publishing organization for the past 33 years with Videomaker Magazine and its affiliated brands, books, DVDs, workshops, videos and websites. In 1986, they founded Videomaker Inc., now a leading publication on video production.
The Yorks were drawn to the field of Information and Communication Technology for Development (ICT4D) and the mission of illuminAid through a desire to foster technology for even greater knowledge and enlightenment throughout the world.
Branching out of Videomaker Inc. in 2008, the Yorks founded illuminAid because of their genuine passion to make a difference in the developing world by bringing change through video. Since then, Matt and Patrice have been able to harness over two decades of expertise in the video consumer electronics industry to grow illuminAid from an idea to a thriving nonprofit organization. Matt is currently engaged in the organization on a full-time basis. He is actively promoting the illuminAid concept by attending conferences and networking events, and by meeting with influential organizations and contacts across the global Information and Communication Technology for Development (ICT4D) space.
The Board of Directors for the company includes respected technologists, journalists, instructional technology experts, economic development experts, consumer electronics executives and financiers.
illuminAid builds the capacity of NGOs and ministries of government by using video technology to train their staff to create videos that promote behavior change.
illuminAid has three fundamental business functions: host workshops, provide equipment, and build the capacity of partner organizations. We do this through a three-pronged approach: train, equip and empower.
The training element comes through our Video Education Workshop (VEW), a four-day lecture/hands-on training provided to organizational staff covering video production, editing and dissemination. The workshop is customized to fit the needs of the partner and prepares staff to produce and show culturally appropriate and locally relevant material. Two illuminAid staff members facilitate each workshop. By leveraging a network of 1,500 Local Video Trainers (LVTs) in 55 developing countries, illuminAid hires local videographers to assist in translation, training and leading small groups at each workshop. The benefit is added one-on-one teaching time for participants, enhancing their learning experience. Videos are created as close to the beneficiary population as possible and can feature local languages, which increases the likelihood the behavior change will be adopted. VEWs can be hosted in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese and Amharic.
The second element to our intervention is to equip our partners with the tools and technology to create and disseminate video. illuminAid provides production and projection kits that are customized to meet the needs of each organization and location. Although each kit is customized, the typical components include a camera kit for shooting video, a projector kit for sharing video and a recharge kit to alternatively recharge equipment using a motorcycle battery or solar panel. Mobile projectors and locally-created videos give organizations more control over the end message, expand the number of people reached, permit the use of non-expert facilitators, and allow for contextually-appropriate information. They can also be used in areas without access to electricity, helping to bridge the digital divide and serving as a leapfrog technology for areas that would otherwise not have access to media.
The third and final element of our intervention is empowering our partners through our Capacity Development Program (CDP). illuminAid has developed an appropriate solution to maintain sustainability and cost-effectiveness for partnering NGOs through the use of LVTs working on the ground in project countries. For three months after the completion of a VEW, an LVT will hold monthly in-country working sessions to support NGO staff members in creating new videos and sharing best practices. The partner organization will also receive support via teleconference, phone or e-mail from illuminAids d staff for one year after the VEW.
