Part Time: 6 hour position Monday-Friday
Approx. Hours: 8:30-3pm w/ 30 min lunch

Job Description / Essential Elements:

BILINGUAL (ENGLISH AND SPANISH) PARAEDUCATOR

Position: The Durham Unified School District has a bilingual paraeducator position available six hours per day (to be determined) Monday through Friday.

DEFINITION:

Under supervision and direction, tutors migrant and EL children. Meets with migrant and EL families to explain individual learning plans. Coordinates student programs with regular classroom teacher and bilingual coordinator. Monitors student progress toward reclassification.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Tutors individuals or small groups of students using methods, materials, and programs prepared for EL children.
Visits homes for educational or health purposes.
Assists parents to participate in school related activities.
Prepares and submits required reports.
Translates forms for the school or parents as requested.
Translates messages to parents from teachers, nurse, psychologist, or administration.
Interprets at parent-teacher conferences, if necessary.
Participates in functional (informal) assessment activities to assist teachers/providers with assessing learner's needs.
Implements lesson and other plans developed by teachers/providers to increase academic skills and the development of social and communication skills, self-esteem, and self-reliance.
Modifies curriculum and instructional activities for individual learners, under the direction of teachers/providers.
Familiarizes employers and other community members of the community with the needs of individual learners (if required by the program or learners needs).
Assist occupational and physical therapists, speech language pathologists, and nurses to provide related services (if required by learner or program needs).
Participates in IEP as translator, or planning team meetings as required by learner needs.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

EL methods and materials.

Ability to:
Speak fluent English and Spanish.
Follow directions and function within the program guidelines.
Collect data, write legibly and complete records in a timely manner.
Function well in a bicultural setting.
Work well with others in a school setting.
Work with bilingual parents.
Use and operate a computer.

Experience:

Experience working with school age children.

Requirements:
In accordance with the Federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB)
Act (P.L.) 107-110 each Instructional Paraeducator must demonstrate compliance and verification of one of the following: 1) 48 semester units from an accredited college or university; 2) Associate's degree or higher; or 3) Passage of another district approved NCLB Local Assessment Test.
