A leading construction materials organization is seeking a Human Resources Generalist to support its California operations. This onsite role is responsible for delivering comprehensive HR support across employee relations, compliance, recruiting, benefits, and organizational development.
This position plays a key role in fostering a people-first, safety-focused culture while ensuring compliance with California employment laws and union regulations.
Relocation assistance and visa sponsorship are not available.
Position Overview
The Human Resources Generalist partners with managers and employees to support the full employee lifecycle. This role handles confidential and sensitive matters daily and contributes to HR programs that drive engagement, compliance, and operational excellence in a unionized construction environment.
Key Responsibilities
Employee Relations & HR Support
• Provide day-to-day HR guidance to employees and supervisors
• Assist with policy interpretation, benefits questions, and sensitive HR matters
• Maintain employee files and ensure accurate recordkeeping
• Coordinate annual performance review processes and employee surveys
• Support job description updates and salary administration
Talent Acquisition
• Manage full-cycle recruiting including job postings, screening, interviews, and pre-employment processes
• Facilitate new hire onboarding and orientation
• Conduct exit interviews and support retention efforts
Compliance & Labor Relations
• Ensure compliance with California employment laws and federal reporting requirements (EEO-1, VETS-100, etc.)
• Support labor relations activities in a unionized environment
• Maintain adherence to Collective Bargaining Agreement requirements
• Promote legal compliance and ethical HR decision-making
Culture, Safety & Organizational Development
• Champion a people-first and safety-first culture
• Support employee engagement initiatives and organizational development efforts
• Assist with integration activities related to mergers and acquisitions
• Support HR process improvements and operational best practices
• Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned
Requirements
Required Qualifications
• Associate degree or equivalent HR experience
• Minimum 5 years of experience in Human Resources
• Strong knowledge of California employment law and HR compliance
• Experience in a unionized construction or materials environment
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• High level of discretion and confidentiality
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office
Preferred Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business, or related field
• 5-8 years of HR experience
• Professional HR certification (SHRM-CP, PHR, SHRM-SCP, SPHR)
• California-specific HR certification (PHRca)
• Experience with HRIS or ERP systems (e.g., UKG, JD Edwards)
• Experience with SmartSheets
• Experience leading employee engagement or training initiatives
• Bilingual English/Spanish
